Braun Inspired Wireless Headphones 2024

Braun & Dieter Rams inspired me to follow product design as a career in 2009 . I have a deep respect for Dieter Ram’s 10 design commandments & believe that products should simply be tools for living. Tools to make life better, more sustainable, simpler and easier for everyone. We live in an age of fast-tech & squeezed deadlines, this is unfortunate, but it does not have to dictate all design practise. I believe the best products are those that have been developed with entropy and a products entire lifecycle in mind. This takes time. In most instances, less is more & simpler solutions trump complexity in my opinion.

I wanted to pay homage to Braun by developing a concept for wireless headphones that was congruent with Ram’s design philosophy.

Each headphone has geometry to allow for easy insertion or removal. The form is distinctive so others can tell you are wearing the headphones from a distance, separating them from a saturated market. I thought about putting the Braun logo on the flat front face but decided that classic Braun would not do anything so garishly self promotional.

I was initially apprehensive about going so minimal and angular on a worn product because I thought it might affect comfort. I tested various options that I 3D printed inhouse. I refined and re-printed new designs until I achieved the best bud angle and softness of the geometry in contact with the user. The version you see in the renderings proved the most comfortable & useable. Please see below for renders and 3D print development.
